Hypothesis: The bio-availability of serotonin for AN patients could be lower due to serotonin degrading bacteria in the gut microbiome of these patients.
Aim of project: We want to isolate and characterize any bacteria that are able to grow on serotonin as their sole carbon-source from fecal samples of AN patients
Perspectives: Knowledge about serotonin degrading strains allows us to screen large number of AN fecal samples (and other diseases) for the bacteria compared to control samples. The strains can also be used in in vivo/vitro models of seretonin related diseases.
If succesful the project would be basis for a PhD application process
