Master Thesis in “Personal breast cancer risk” at Københavns Universitet

Posted 2 weeks ago

Every 8th woman in Denmark develops breast cancer in her lifetime. To detect breast cancer at an early stage with a favorable prognosis, all women aged 50-69 are offered mammography every 2nd year. During the last 15 years, we have contributed to the development of a personal risk model for breast cancer, consisting of information of 313 common single nucleotide polymorphisms, lifestyle, reproductive history, family history and the density of breast tissue from the mammography. We think that a personalized screening programme based on each woman’s personal risk will produce more benefits and less harms. First step towards an implementation is to validate and calibrate this risk model to women in Denmark using very large Danish population studies. Dependent on the progress of the project, next step will consist of mapping barriers and facilitators of personalized breast cancer screening among Danish women. The project is supported by the Region Hovedstaden Research Council.

You will have the opportunity to work with high quality data and will work with genetic and other information to produce robust risk predictions. We expect the work to lead to scientific publications.

You will learn

We represent a recently established research collaboration between the Copenhagen General Population Study, the Danish Blood Donor Study, Institute of Public Health, UCPH, and Cambridge University, UK.

The project is headed by Professor Stig E Bojesen, Herlev Gentofte Hospital and department of Clinical Medicine, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen
