Postdoc position in Integrated Quantum Optics at Aarhus Universitet

Within the Department of Engineering at Aarhus University, Denmark, a 2-year postdoc position in the field of photonic integration is available.

Quantum-based encryption is going to play an essential role our future optical networks, to keep these secure. Some first secure links have now been set up around the world, both in fiber, e.g., between banks, and free-space, e.g., to a satellite, but the technology remains too bulky and costly for ubiquitous use. Our objective is to use mature photonic integration technology (so-called “optical chips”) to realize transmitters and receivers for quantum cryptography, compatible with fiber-optic networks. With our commercial partners we intend to transfer our successful results out of the laboratory, into real-world networks.

As a postdoc, you will design and develop photonic integrated circuits (PICs) for the transmission and detection of such encrypted signals. We will use indium phosphide (InP) based PIC technology [1]. Monolithic low-noise lasers, with linewidths well below 100 kHz, will be explored and realized, and will be combined with modulators and balanced detectors, on the same PIC, to realize the transmitter and receiver. The PICs will be designed and experimentally characterized by you. Our Fotonik Lab is fully equipped to do this. Fabrication of the PICs will be done in commercial foundries, such as SMART Photonics or Heinrich Hertz Institute, through multi-project wafer runs, offered through the JePPIX platform [2]. Together with our academic and commercial partners we will then implement these PICs into fiber optic links.

Our takes a fabless approach, which means that we focus on the simulation, design and characterization of circuits for the selected applications, leaving the fabrication to so-called foundry platforms, e.g., as offered through JePPIX.

Aarhus University is a leading research university, which is in the top-100 on several major global university rankings. The Department of Engineering has only recently been established and is growing rapidly in terms of students, staff and research output, thereby offering very nice opportunities for pioneering efforts. You will actively be involved in reaching out to industry to transfer this photonic technology and in acquiring new projects based on this work.

Qualifications and specific competences

  • a PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or similar, with a strong publication track record in fields relevant to the position;
  • a solid background in opto-electronics / photonics;
  • experimental skills in optics and photonics;
  • the ability and willingness to explore the fundamental limits of photonic integrated circuit performance;
  • the ability to work with experts from a broad range of scientific and technology backgrounds;
  • strong communication and collaboration skills.

Application procedure

Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the appointment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. All applicants will be notified whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee, and each applicant is given the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that concerns him/her self. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants.

Letter of reference

If you want a referee to upload a letter of reference on your behalf, please state the referee’s contact information when you submit your application. We strongly recommend that you make an agreement with the person in ques-tion before you enter the referee’s contact information, and that you ensure that the referee has enough time to write the letter of reference before the application deadline.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to ensure that letters of reference received after the application deadline will be taken into consideration.

Formalities and salary range

  • The application must be in English and include a curriculum vitae, degree certificate, a complete list of publications, a statement of future research plans and information about research activities, teaching portfolio and verified information on previous teaching experience (if any). Guidelines for applicants can be found
  • Appointment shall be in accordance with the collective labour agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Further information on qualification requirements and job content may be found in the .
  • Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
  • All interested candidates are encouraged to apply, regardless of their personal background. Research activities will be evaluated in relation to actual research time. Thus, we encourage applicants to specify periods of leave without research activities, in order to be able to subtract these periods from the span of the scientific career during the evaluation of scientific productivity.
  • Aarhus University offers a broad variety of services for international researchers and accompanying families, including relocation service and career counselling to expat partners.
