Master or Bachelor Thesis - Machine shop capacity, planning and utilization at Atlas Copco

Sweden

Target:

This target of this project is two-fold:

  • Firstly, to develop a method to measure and visualize current demands as a basis for back-on-track calculations and forecasting.
  • Also, to develop a method for measuring available machine capacity versus machine utilization within the Atlas Copco framework.

Background:

Tierp works is the main production facility for assembly tools within Atlas Copco Industrial Technique business area. This world-class production facility has both final assembly of tools and a machine workshop that produce key components.
The Tierp machine shop have a wide range of machine types with varying utilization patterns, shift forms and demands. Production is planned with a forecast-based cover time MRP system that nightly recalculates demands and scheduling. The combination of operational complexity and dynamic, forecast-based planning makes it difficult to define back-orders, when production is started on time, and the production needed to remove all backlog within a certain period.

Mission:

This project will be considered a success if:
  1. We have a method to on material, order and production cell level can show if production is early, late or according to plan.
  2. Define the production needed on production cell level to be in line with demands and have no delayed production.
  3. Calculate machine capacity and machine utilization as per the Atlas Copco framework
