A 3-year PhD scholarship in metal-organic framework (MOF) chemistry funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark is available at the Department of Chemistry. The project will be under supervision of Associate Professor Kasper S. Pedersen and is starting as soon as possible.
Responsibilities and qualifications
The synthetic engineering of the inorganic and organic building blocks constituting all MOF-materials leads to almost endless possibilities for MOF properties tuning (e.g. electronic, magnetic, optical, etc.). The PhD project will focus on the design, synthesis, and characterization of new types of metal-organic network based on the lanthanide ions. This includes also the elucidation of structural and physical properties, and electronic structures. A significant fraction of the experiments will be performed at international large-scale facilities (synchrotron and neutron sources) in Europe and in the US. The project will have significant impact on the understanding of novel magnetic MOFs based on lanthanide ions, and the correlations between chemical and electronic structures and the ensuing MOF properties. Active dissemination of the obtained results, in scientific articles and through participation in international conferences, is an integral part of the job.
The candidate should have a Master’s degree (120 ECTS points; or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree) in chemistry with a focus on synthetic inorganic chemistry and the physical characterization of coordination compounds. Experience with lanthanide chemistry, crystallography, magnetometry, and spectroscopy (electron paramagnetic resonance, luminescence, inelastic neutron scattering) are considered a strong advantage. Most importantly, the candidate should be highly motivated, able to work independently and should be confident in both written and spoken English. The applicant should strive towards scientific excellence, be ambitious and hard working.
