Master Thesis – Cable temperature and losses in offshore wind farms

The aim of the project is to provide an understanding of the impact of different types of cable modelling, based on temperature, on array system losses. Detailed project description

Offshore wind farms are becoming larger and are installed further away from shore. At the same time, the cost of electricity needs to be reduced. It is therefore very important to optimise the electrical infrastructure. One aspect of the optimisation is the electrical losses in the power cables, mainly in the in-site cables between wind turbines.

The losses are calculated from the known generation profile and from the power flow in the cables. When doing this, some simplifications are made, such as assuming a constant resistance. This may be a best case (lowest temperature) or a worst case (all cables at the highest temperature) scenario. The student will conduct the following tasks:

  • Review literature in temperature cable modelling.
  • Investigate methods for cable modelling in power system analysis tools.
  • Combine cable modelling with generation profiles to assess the impact on the wind farm losses.
  • Compare with measurements.
  • Provide guidelines on the cable modelling approach taking into consideration any limitations.
  • The student will be supported with necessary data, guidance and feedback on the work. The results are expected to be valuable knowledge for future real offshore wind projects.
